Why the piqué matters

René Lacoste designed this shirt in 1933 to replace the hot woven shirts tennis players wore at the time. He used petit piqué — a lightly textured cotton weave that breathes better than flat jersey and holds its shape instead of clinging. That weave is what you are paying for. It is why a Lacoste polo still looks structured after fifty washes and why the collar stands up rather than curling over.

Sizing

Lacoste uses French numeric sizing rather than S/M/L: 3 = Small, 4 = Medium, 5 = Large, 6 = XL, 7 = XXL. The classic fit is cut generously through the body; the slim fit is noticeably closer. If you are used to a Tommy or Ralph polo and want the same feel, the classic fit in your usual size is the match.

Care

Wash at 30 and dry flat. Never tumble dry a piqué polo — heat is what shrinks the collar and takes the stand out of it, and once that goes it does not come back.
