Why the polo is the way it is

René Lacoste designed the shirt in 1933 to replace the hot, restrictive woven shirts tennis players wore at the time. He used petit piqué — a lightly textured cotton weave that breathes better than flat jersey and holds its shape instead of clinging. That piqué is still what you are paying for: it is why a Lacoste polo looks structured after fifty washes and why the collar stands up rather than curling. The crocodile came from his nickname on the circuit, and was one of the first visible logos on a garment.

French sizing

Lacoste uses numbers rather than letters: 3 = Small, 4 = Medium, 5 = Large, 6 = XL, 7 = XXL. Classic fit is cut generously through the body, slim fit is noticeably closer.

Beyond the polo
