Built for weather, not for the look of it

Helly Hansen has been making protective clothing in Norway since 1877, originally for sailors and fishermen. The Helly Tech membranes are the part that matters — rated for both waterproofing and breathability, which is the combination most jackets get wrong. Which jacket

Shell jackets — no insulation, fully waterproof, worn over your own layers. The most versatile choice in Ireland, because you can wear one from October to April by changing what goes underneath.

Insulated jackets — waterproof outer with fill built in. Warmer and simpler, less adaptable.

Care

Wash them more often than you would think. Dirt and body oils clog the face fabric and stop water beading, which is usually why a jacket seems to have stopped being waterproof when the membrane is fine. Use a technical cleaner, never fabric softener.
