Built for weather, not for the look of it
Helly Hansen has been making protective clothing in Norway since 1877, originally for sailors and fishermen. That is still what the brand is for. A Helly Hansen jacket is engineered around keeping water out and moving sweat away, and everything else follows from that.
The Helly Tech membranes are the part that matters. They are rated for both waterproofing and breathability, which is the combination most jackets get wrong — plenty of coats keep rain out and leave you damp from the inside instead.
Which jacket
Shell jackets — no insulation, fully waterproof, worn over your own layers. The most versatile choice in Ireland, because you can wear one from October to April by changing what goes underneath.
Insulated jackets — waterproof outer with fill built in. Warmer and simpler, less adaptable.
Fleeces and mid-layers — designed to sit under a shell. Worth buying as a pair if you are outdoors regularly.
Fit and sizing
Helly Hansen runs true to size with room for a mid-layer already allowed for. Do not size up unless you plan to wear a heavy jumper underneath — an oversized shell lets wind in at the hem and cuffs and works less well.
Sleeves are cut slightly long by design, so they still cover your wrists when your arms are raised.
Care
Waterproof jackets need washing more often than people think. Dirt and body oils clog the face fabric and stop water beading, which is usually why a jacket seems to have "stopped being waterproof" when the membrane is perfectly fine.
Wash with a technical cleaner rather than ordinary detergent, and never use fabric softener. A warm tumble dry reactivates the water-repellent finish on most shells.
Layering it
