Why the yellow boot became the yellow boot
Timberland's original waterproof boot came out of New Hampshire in the early 1970s, built for men working outdoors in wet, cold conditions. The innovation was injection moulding the sole directly to the leather upper, which removed the stitching line where water normally gets in.
That construction is still the basis of the range. A Timberland boot is heavier than a fashion boot because it is built around waterproofing and a bonded sole rather than around looking light.
Which style
The 6-Inch Premium — the original. Nubuck upper, padded collar, genuinely waterproof. The warmest and most weatherproof thing in the range, and the bulkiest.
Chukka and desert boots — lower, lighter, less obviously a work boot. Easier with chinos and a jacket, and the better choice if you want something that works in an office.
Shoes and loafers — the smartest end, still with the comfort sole underneath.
Sizing and fit
Timberland runs roughly a half size large, and the 6-Inch in particular is generously cut. Most men take a half size down from their usual, especially if they wear a thin sock.
The boots need a short break-in — the nubuck softens after a week or so of wear and the collar settles. They should feel firm rather than tight when new.
Caring for nubuck
Nubuck is not smooth leather and it should not be polished. Brush it dry with a nubuck brush to lift the nap, and use a spray protector before the first wear rather than after the first soaking.
Salt marks and water stains lift with a nubuck rubber, not with water. If they get properly soaked, dry them slowly away from a radiator — direct heat will crack the leather.
What to wear them with
Boots want a bit of weight above them. Straight or slim-straight jeans rather than skinny, and a jacket with some structure. A chukka works well with chinos and an overshirt.
