Belfast, not Milan

The Italian name misleads a lot of people. Remus Uomo is not an Italian brand — it was founded in Belfast in 1991 and is still owned by Douglas & Grahame, a family menswear house that has been trading in Belfast since 1924. The name is a nod to the family's long affection for Italian tailoring, not to where the brand comes from.

The company has leaned into this in recent years, running a campaign under the line "Belfast Not Milan". It is one of the reasons we have carried the brand for years: it is a genuinely Irish tailoring house, run by the third generation of the same family, and it is now stocked by more than 400 independents across Ireland and Britain.

What Remus Uomo does well

Fit, mainly. Remus built its reputation on formal tailoring, and that discipline carries into everything else it makes — the casual shirts are cut with more shape than most, and the chinos are cleaner through the leg than the high-street equivalent.

The other thing is price position. You get proper tailoring detail — working sleeve buttons, half-canvassed construction on the jackets, considered lining — at a price well below the designer labels. The brand has been named Menswear Brand of the Year at the Drapers Independents Awards, voted for by the independent retailers who actually sell it.

The cut

Remus runs slim. It is a tailored, Italian-influenced silhouette rather than a classic British block, so if you are between sizes or you prefer a bit of room, size up or come in and try it on.

Shirts are cut close through the chest and taper at the waist — designed to be worn tucked. Blazers sit high in the armhole, which looks sharper but means less room over a heavy jumper.

How to wear it

The blazers and sports jackets are the entry point for most men — a navy Remus blazer over a plain shirt and chinos covers almost every occasion between the office and a meal out.

The casual side is worth a look too. Remus polo shirts and knitwear are cut sharper than most and work under a sports jacket without bunching. Their shirts handle both a tie and an open collar, which not every shirt does.
