Superdry is not Japanese

Worth clearing up, because the branding suggests otherwise. Superdry was founded in Cheltenham in England in 2003. The Japanese lettering on the graphics is a design language the founders borrowed after a trip to Tokyo — the company has always been British.

That matters less for the clothes than for the fit. Superdry is cut to a British block, not a Japanese one, which is why the sizing behaves the way most men here expect.

What they do best

Jackets, without much argument. Superdry built its reputation on outerwear and it is still the strongest part of the range — windcheaters, padded jackets, hooded parkas and the SD-Windtrekker style, generally with better weatherproofing than the price suggests.

The hoodies and sweatshirts are the other pillar. Heavier loopback cotton than most high-street equivalents, which is why they hold shape rather than going shapeless after a season.

Sizing

Superdry t-shirts and polo shirts run slightly small and slim. Most men take a size up from their usual, particularly in the graphic tees.

Jackets are truer to size and cut with layering room, so your normal size is usually right. Hoodies sit in between — true to size if you like them close, one up if you want to wear a layer underneath.
